This is my interpretation of Kahungunu.
I took it from one of the pou carved in Te Whare o Rangi — the wharenui at my old high school, Te Aute College.
I'd been wanting to paint it. Around the same time Mum handed me a manila folder. Our whakapapa. She said, "yeah, you look after this."
So I went through it. And I buzzed out. From her koro and kuia, the lines run straight back to Kahungunu.
Damn. I'm a direct descendant.
This one's Kahungunu. But it isn't only for Kahungunu.
It's a statement. You come from a long line of people who navigated. People who worked out what was happening in this world, in this place, and how to be here. Think about all of them — the ones who are now the namesakes of our iwi, our hapū. The prophets we descend from. Every one of them was trying to make uri who'd keep going.
Do you reckon they thought the line would last this long? I don't know. But I'm here.
That's what I want you to feel. Know your place. You're here for something bigger than you — to keep the lines going.
And what if, twenty generations out, your uri are painting you? Telling stories about what you were and what you got through?
That's what Direct Descendant means to me.
