Mauao. Hikurangi. Taranaki.

None of these are my maunga. I don't whakapapa to any of them. They're the ones I grew up travelling past — three I've always been in awe of.

Mauao is the one everyone gets to be amongst. Central. Climbable. Everyone's.

Hikurangi — at school there were a lot of people from the East Coast, and all of them whakapapa to it. We'd go up the coast a lot. I remember being on the bus and just seeing it, buzzing out at the size of it, knowing it's the first place in the world to catch the sun.

Taranaki — for years I only ever saw it in cloud. Never saw the top. The longer life goes on the more I catch it. I was up Ruapehu the other day and could see it from there, clear as day.
